The Two Questions

Guess who had the oldest colony in India many will guess it to be Britain but the truth is Portugal. Portuguese colonial expansion started in India in 1750 from the annexation of Goa. Portuguese settled in India a few decades before the British settled in Masulipattinam. Portugal was the first European nation to start a colony in India so much so that Goa was “Lisbon of East”

Guess who had the longest period of colonization in India the answer is again Portugal. After the British, Dutch and French left India. Portugal clung on to its colonies in India declaring them to be Portugal. The negotiation went on until 1962 for independence. Portugal was testing the patience of the Indian government. The new Indian government was reluctant to take up an armed stance with Portugal. It was rebuilding itself, also had some not so good neighbors around (Pakistan and China). The issue was so sensitive that the Portugal government closed the Indian embassy in Lisbon

Independence from Portugal

People in Goa, Nagar Haveli, Daman, Diu and the Island of Anjediva started revolting against Portugal. People from these regions wanted to join the Union of India. The revolution started off bloody and the Portuguese India government took a strong stance in quenching the revolt. During this…
